A Personal Project: George Brooker House
One of my most meaningful documentary projects was photographing at George Brooker House, a local care home where most residents live with dementia or memory loss.
A close school friend of mine, who has managed the home for over 30 years, helped me gain access with full consent from families and the home’s leadership. I was drawn to the love and care I had seen during previous visits and wanted to capture the heart of that environment through my lens.
Over the course of a year, I photographed life in the home ,moments of joy, music, therapy dogs, and the tender interactions between residents, staff, and visitors. While dementia is a cruel disease, I focused on the small, beautiful moments that still shine through.
The project was not without challenges. Unlike typical shoots where I build relationships over time, here I was a stranger with a camera, often forgotten seconds after a smile or greeting. But these fleeting connections made the experience all the more powerful.
This project holds a special place in my heart. If you have a story that deserves to be documented, I’d love to hear from you. I'm open to commissions.
